KidZania Opens Their First U.S. Location

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to attend the grand opening of KidZania’s first U.S. location, which happens to be just down the road at Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, Texas. KidZania was originally founded in 1997 in Mexico and now boasts 29 locations in 22 countries around the world.

When you arrive, you enter through what looks like an airport terminal. There is even part of an actual plane overhead! You check in with a ticket agent and each child and parent is given a bracelet with RFID technology that is used to both track their progress through the city and match the child up to the parent upon checkout. (For the children’s safety, no adults are allowed to enter without a child.) Each child is given some KidZania currency to start out with (known as kidZos). After check-in, you go through security then enter the city.

The city is absolutely amazing when you enter. You can’t grasp the enormous scale of all of it from photos. From the ceiling that has been painted to look like the sky, the streets and sidewalks, street and traffic lights and realistic two-story buildings, every detail has been incredibly well thought out. The most difficult decision your child will have to make is where to start!

Here are some of the questions I have been asked about KidZania:

  • What ages do you recommend attending?
-KidZania is geared towards ages 6-14. They do have a toddler area, but overall the activities are geared towards older kiddos.
  • How much does it cost?
Children 3 Years and Under: FREE
    Children 4-5 Years: $14.95
    Children 6-14 Years: $39.95
(children over 8 years old are permitted to attend without an adult)
    Adults 15+ Years: $14.95
  • What do kids do at KidZania?
Kids get to explore over 100 different activities and professions in the city. Each time they complete a “job” they earn kidZos (KidZania currency) that they can use towards things like college & the aviation academy or they can deposit them at the bank where the tellers will give them their own bank card. They can also spend their kidZos at the KidZania store.
  • What are the food/beverage options at KidZania Frisco?
KidZania has great dining options and interactive restaurants such as Pie Five Pizza, MOOYAH Burger, Fries & Shakes, Happy Taco (opening soon), 7-Eleven (pre-packaged sandwiches, salads, snacks, drinks), where cash and credit cards are accepted (kidZos cannot be used for food/beverages).
  • What are some of the activities and professions available for kids?
Pilot, firefighter, veterinarian, fashion model, hair stylist, NICU nurse, surgeon, courier, window washer (such a genius idea to keep the windows clean!), graphic artist, animator, news reporter, podcaster, actor, ropes course and more!
  • What do adults do at KidZania?
KidZania is designed for kids to independently explore their way through the city, so only kids can participate in the activities. All establishments have floor to ceiling glass windows to see-in. No adults are allowed to participate, go inside establishments, or hold a spot in line.
Adults are welcome to wait outside establishments or in the Parents’ Lounge, which is equipped with WiFi, TVs, and comfortable seating. Adults can participate as spectators in some noted establishments such as the Theater and TV Studio.

Our experience at KidZania was truly awesome. I loved getting to see my daughter learn in such a creative environment. She thrived in this setting and was never bored (we were there over 8 hours on our first visit and neither of us wanted to leave!).

I attended this event with a friend and her daughter, and it was so nice to get to see our kids exploring their activities independently while we got to hang out for some much needed adult conversation. There was plenty of seating to remain close to our kids, but we were able to wander around and explore ourselves while they were doing each activity. It is such a great concept for both kids and adults! Everyone wins!

While we were there, Adalyn learned a flash mob dance routine at the acting school, learned how to do a manicure at the salon, she then took her eye exam (and passed) and was able to attend the aviation academy (with real flight simulators). She then attended fire school and got to ride on a fire truck and help put out a fire. She dabbled in drawing as a graphic designer, worked with the premie babies in the NICU, opened a bank account, delivered packages as a courier, did some forensic investigating & deposited her kidZos at the bank. It was a full day of adventure and learning!

Adalyn stopped by the shop (Zentral Boutique) so she could spend some of her kidZos, then we headed home. Before leaving, you exit through departures, where you must check out so they can match you and your child’s RFID bracelets. There is also a shop where you can buy KidZania branded merchandise. (kidZos cannot be used here however)

Nothing like this has ever existed in the United States. We are so fortunate to have the first location in the Dallas area. It truly is what has been missing for kids. KidZania teaches children real-life skills in an independent and ultrarealistic setting. I highly recommend you checking it out. You won’t be disappointed!
